7 Mistakes To Avoid When Painting Your Bedroom in Milford, CT
New Haven Blogging • November 15, 2021

There are few rooms in your home that are comparable to your bedroom - and though typically you are one of the few people that will be ever going there, it's still nice to have a bedroom that is aesthetically pleasing. As you'll want your room to look its best (and you certainly wouldn't want the paint job on your walls to get too old, lest it get more difficult to paint it in the long run) it's worth making the time when needed to either paint your bedroom or hire a professional painting contractor to do the work for you.

However, you should be aware that sometimes the seemingly smallest mistakes in painting can wreck a painting project and just knowing about them can help you avoid them. Let's now look at and consider seven mistakes to avoid when painting your bedroom in Milford, CT.

1. Not Measuring Your Walls Before Painting

It's important to know how much wall there is to be painted, and there are two key reasons for this need for information. The biggest one is that by knowing how much space there is to be painted, you will know how much paint and primer you are going to need. Sure, you can probably guesstimate this figure and say that each bucket will cover a wall and that you therefore need four buckets of paint but this is likely to be wildly inaccurate and you will end up with too much paint... much of which you won't be able to go and will have to go to be recycled (ideally) and thus have you spend more money than necessary. The other thing is that by knowing how much you have to paint, you can make a good schedule for when you will be painting, when you will be letting surfaces dry, etc. - a good thing if you want to get the painting project done in a reasonable time.

2. Not Considering Light When Choosing Color

When you're looking at choosing what might be a new color or colors for painting your bedroom it's important to think about not just how the color is going to look during the day with the sun coming into the room but also how the colors will look at night when your only light source is a lamp, for example. For this reason it's a good idea to not just get paint swatches and go off of how they look but rather to get actual paint samples and paint small squares on the wall and then look at how the room looks with the new colors at different times of the day. Only by doing this will you really get a feel for how good the colors are ultimately going to look.

3. Skipping The Sanding Step

You may be able to imagine well that having a smooth surface is one of the keys to having a successful painting project.

It's therefore strongly recommended that you sand the surfaces that are going to be painted, as doing so even gently will get you that smooth surface to help you get the paint and primer on more easily. If you're thinking that primer does not play into your painting project, please read on.

4. Not Using Primer Before Painting

In painting a room, since we already have established that having a smooth surface is key, you should be aware that just applying your paint to the surface with even just having sanded will make for a smoother paint job... but did you know that applying a coat of primer will make it go even better? The benefits of primer are that it makes the surface a bit more smooth than sanding alone but the chemical properties of primer also mean that the surface will be more adhesive and receptive to your paint.

5. Not Fixing Holes In Your Wall

Some will see holes in the wall and think they're no big deal as they can be taken care of with the primer and the paint that will be applied -- this is not so. You have to really get in there with some corrective action in that you have to use the right kind of patching material for the holes in your wall -- depending on the size of the holes, that is. Make sure that you fix wall holes before you even start with the sanding and the like.

6. Not Using Protective Gear

If when you think about people painting you think about a couple of people wearing overalls and a t-shirt with not a single piece of protective equipment to be seen, you need to up your expectations. Wearing goggles when you're painting is essential as it's a lot better to get dust on your goggles than on your actual eyes... and the same goes for paint. Then you're going to want to wear a face mask so you're not breathing in any loose particles out there... not the best thing for you to say the least.

7. Painting Too Quickly

Painting too quickly hardly seems like it would be an issue and yet it absolutely is -- when you paint too quickly you may think you're saving time but you end up spending more time overall because you almost definitely will make some mistakes in the painting process that will have to be later found and corrected. It's a lot better to take your time painting and therefore avoid these mistakes. Need professional help to repaint your home interior? New Haven Painters can help.
