7 Mistakes To Avoid When Painting Your Dining Room in Branford, CT
New Haven Blogging • November 15, 2021

When you're thinking about how great the dining room would look with a fresh paint coat (or two) you may find yourself thinking about how very easy it would be indeed to go to the room and just hit the ground running with a nice painting project to get the walls painted. If you are not careful, however, you are going to likely find yourself falling for some of the very simple to make mistakes that will make the painting of your dining room that much more difficult to do -- and in some cases, will have you need to start all over again as if you had not painted it at all. With that being the case, let's look at seven mistakes to avoid when painting your dining room in Branford, CT.

1. Rushing To Get Started

One mistake that people tend to make when they're painting their dining room is that in all the excitement to get it done, they just rush to get the project started without doing any kind of planning or prep work whatsoever. Those same people will soon realize, however, that a lot of planning has to be done before you start any interior painting project and this does in fact extend to painting your dining room. One important thing that people do when they're planning is to choose dining room colors (or even just one color if they want to stick with one color for the wall) because if you don't know what color you're going to use and just go to the paint store unprepared, you may end up with a color that you're going to hate.

2. Rushing The Paint Work In General

In general, the process of painting an interior room is going to be a bit time consuming and though we do want to get on with it as it were, to rush the work is just going to hurt you long term with some of the things that will go wrong as a result of doing so. By rushing through pretty much any aspect of the painting process, you'll be doing a disservice to the project as a whole as you will make painting mistakes that are going to be difficult to properly correct, and even if you do correct them it just means that you'll have spent time doing it that could have been spent just doing the work more carefully.

3. Not Protecting The Ground

We are all aware that paint drips -- it's one of the qualities of paint of which we can be fairly certain. What people don't tend to think about is how the dripping paint is going to affect the dining room in which we are painting -- and it's really a matter of realizing that if the paint drips down and nothing is protecting the floor, it will get dirty and we will then have to spend a good amount of time cleaning. With a simple drop cloth, on the other hand, we can get away with a little dripping paint here and there and not worry about getting the floor dirty.

4. Using Inexpensive Paint Brushes

Of course a typical painting project is going to be a bit costly and it's a good thing to look for areas in the painting process where we are going to be able to save money. Where you won't want to do this, however, is when you are looking to buy paint brushes - there's a reason those inexpensive paint brushes are so cheap and it comes down to how poorly they are manufactured. You will see the difference when you find bristles of the paintbrush in the paint (that you then have to dig out) and the fact that it will be much more uncomfortable painting - it's certainly not worth saving a few dollars just to struggle.

5. Not Cleaning At All

As you're painting the dining room, you may well wonder what the point of cleaning is since you are going to have paint over the wall surfaces, after all. The point of it is that you don't want the walls to look as though you just painted over dirt or grime -- it's not the look you want for your dining room walls. Make the time to clean the walls and even the room in general and you'll have a better painted room.

6. Using The Wrong Kind Of Paint

As you'll be painting a dining room, you should think about how messy it can sometimes get and how it's easier to clean a glossy paint than one that is more flat. Choose a good glossy paint that is meant for interior painting and you'll do a lot better when you come to clean the walls from time to time.

7. Applying Another Coat Too Soon

Lastly, remember that you should not apply a second coat of paint before you've allowed the first coat to dry. Doing so is just going to ruin the first coat and cause you to have to scrap the whole project and start again, since the brush will lift part of the first coat up, because it hasn't dried. Let that first coat dry before adding a second. Need professional help to repaint your home interior? New Haven Painters can help.
